Dedication and Determination: A Journey to Health

“Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” – Robert Collier

I’ve always loved this quote because it perfectly encapsulates the journey I’ve been on. Today, I’m writing with excitement, gratitude, and a renewed sense of purpose. After three long years of perseverance, ups and downs, and countless moments of growth, my medical insurance has approved my bariatric sleeve surgery, scheduled for December 19th. This is the moment I’ve worked so hard for—a milestone that marks the start of a new chapter in my life.

This journey has never been easy. It’s been one of dedication, determination, and an unshakable belief in the possibility of a healthier, happier future. As I embark on this final stretch, beginning the 800-calorie pre-surgery diet, I’m reminded that every sacrifice I’ve made and every challenge I’ve overcome has brought me to this point.

14 Days to Go: The Pre-Surgery Diet

Today marks the start of my liquid diet, a critical part of the process to ensure a safe and successful surgery. For the next two weeks, I’ll be consuming only protein shakes and clear liquids. It’s a strict plan, but one I’ve committed to wholeheartedly.

Here are the key guidelines I’m following:

  • Protein Shakes: I’ve chosen the Atkins Advantage shakes, which provide the nutrients and energy I need while keeping my calorie intake in check.
  • Clear Liquids: This includes water, clear broth or bouillon, sugar-free popsicles, plain gelatin (without sugar or fruit), and pulp-free juices like apple or cranberry.
  • Hydration: Drinking at least 64 ounces of fluids daily is essential to stay hydrated and keep my body functioning optimally.

This isn’t just about following a diet—it’s about preparing my body and mind for the transformation ahead.

Dedication Through the Challenges

“Dedication is doing what needs to be done, even when you don’t feel like doing it.”

Over the years, I’ve learned that true dedication means showing up for yourself, even on the hardest days. This journey has tested me in ways I never imagined—from navigating the emotional toll of weight loss to battling the physical challenges of PCOS, endometriosis, and hormonal imbalances.

There were moments when the progress felt too slow, when frustration and self-doubt threatened to take over. But every time I felt like giving up, I reminded myself why I started.

  • I am doing this for my health. My body deserves to be treated with care and respect, and I owe it to myself to prioritize my well-being.
  • I am doing this for my future. I want to live a long, active life filled with energy and vitality.
  • I am doing this to inspire others. If my journey can show even one person that change is possible, it’s all worth it.

The Role of Determination

“Determination gives you the resolve to keep going in spite of the roadblocks that lay before you.” – Denis Waitley

If dedication is about consistency, determination is about resilience. It’s about finding strength in the face of setbacks and continuing to push forward, no matter what.

  • My determination has been tested time and time again:
  • When I faced medical setbacks and surgeries.
  • When I had to overcome my fear of stepping into a gym for the first time.
  • When I made the tough decision to change my lifestyle, cutting out fast food and sweets.
  • When I committed to 4 a.m. workouts to create a routine that aligned with my goals.

Each of these moments could have been an excuse to stop, but instead, they became opportunities to grow. Determination is what turns challenges into stepping stones.

The Rewards of the Journey

“The future depends on what you do today.” – Mahatma Gandhi

Looking back, this journey has been filled with so many victories—both big and small. I’ve lost nearly 100 pounds naturally over the past year, improved my health to the point where I no longer need diabetic medications, and gained a new sense of confidence and self-worth.

  • The process of preparing for bariatric surgery has been about so much more than weight loss. It’s been about:
  • Building healthier habits. I’ve learned how to fuel my body with nourishing foods and make choices that support my goals.
  • Reclaiming my mental health. Therapy, self-reflection, and setting boundaries have helped me prioritize my emotional well-being.
  • Celebrating progress. Even on the toughest days, I’ve found ways to acknowledge how far I’ve come.

14 Days to Surgery: A Time for Reflection

As I count down the days to December 19th, I’m taking time to reflect on the lessons I’ve learned and the person I’ve become. This isn’t just the start of a new chapter—it’s the culmination of years of hard work, determination, and belief in myself.

Here are a few motivational reminders I’m carrying with me:

“Don’t watch the clock; do what it does. Keep going.” – Sam Levenson

“What seems impossible today will one day become your warm-up.”

“The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack in will.” – Vince Lombardi

The Road Ahead

Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix or an easy way out—it’s a tool that will help me continue the hard work I’ve already been doing. I know that the road ahead will still have its challenges, but I’m ready for them.

I’m ready to embrace this new chapter with open arms, knowing that every step of this journey has prepared me for what’s next. I’m ready to continue showing up for myself, even when it’s hard. And I’m ready to inspire others to believe in their own potential for change.

A Thank You to My Support System

None of this would have been possible without the love and support of the people around me. To my family, friends, and care team—thank you for cheering me on, holding me accountable, and believing in me when I needed it most.

December 19th is just around the corner, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s to come. This journey has been one of dedication and determination, and I’m proud of the person I’ve become along the way.

If you’re reading this and you’re on your own journey—whether it’s weight loss, personal growth, or another goal—remember this:

“You are capable of amazing things. Keep going, stay focused, and never give up on yourself.”

Here’s to the next chapter!
