Embracing New Beginnings: Phase Three of My VSG Journey, MBA Pursuits, and Leadership Insights

This week marked a significant milestone in my journey toward better health and a more sustainable lifestyle. On Tuesday, I had my follow-up appointment with my surgeon, who officially cleared me to begin Phase Three of the Cleveland Clinic’s Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) diet plan. Phase Three, as outlined in the clinic’s protocols, focuses on pureed foods and spans approximately six to eight weeks. This phase is a critical step in my post-surgery journey, as it reintroduces the body to more texture while ensuring proper healing and nutritional intake.

Transitioning to Phase Three: Pureed Foods

On Wednesday, I eagerly embraced this new phase by preparing my first meal: a scrambled egg mixed with half a cup of cottage cheese. This simple yet satisfying dish provided about 4 ounces of protein-rich nourishment. It was a moment of celebration and reflection—a tangible reminder of how far I’ve come.

The Cleveland Clinic’s guidelines emphasize the importance of consuming at least 60-70 grams of protein daily and maintaining a fluid intake of 64 ounces. This balance is essential not only for healing but also for long-term success in achieving weight loss and sustaining health. To meet my protein goals, I’ve been experimenting with various pureed options. Another success was a ricotta bake, a dish that combined flavor and texture while adhering to my dietary restrictions.

I also tried 4 ounces of Greek yogurt mixed with peanut butter powder. While the combination was high in protein, the texture was a bit chalky. Despite this, it was a valuable learning experience in finding what works for my palate and nutritional needs. For dessert, I treated myself to 4 ounces of chocolate protein pudding, which provided a whopping 25 grams of protein. This was a sweet yet compliant way to end the day on a high note.

Daily Protein and Hydration Goals

Adhering to the diet’s requirements is both a challenge and a motivator. Reaching the minimum 60 grams of protein daily ensures that my body has the building blocks it needs to heal and preserve muscle mass. The emphasis on hydration is equally crucial. Combined with the protein intake, drinking 64 ounces of water and other approved fluids supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall well-being. I’ve come to appreciate the discipline required to meet these goals, as they form the foundation for my post-surgery lifestyle.

Preparing for New Challenges: Starting My MBA

As I adapt to these dietary changes, I’m also preparing for another major transition. On Monday, I will officially begin my Master of Business Administration (MBA) program through Life Pacific University. This milestone represents a significant step in advancing my career aspirations. Pursuing an MBA will equip me with the skills and knowledge to return to the medical field in a higher capacity, where I hope to influence positive changes in healthcare delivery and patient outcomes.

Balancing my academic pursuits with my health journey will require careful planning and determination. However, I am confident that the lessons I’ve learned—from managing my diet to setting achievable goals—will serve me well in this new chapter.

DTI50 Progress Update

The Desire to Inspire 50 (DTI50) program continues to be a source of motivation and accountability. Achieving my daily step goal of 10,000 steps has been a rewarding challenge, especially as I navigate the post-surgery recovery period. Walking on the treadmill has become a cornerstone of my routine, and I look forward to incorporating strength training in a few weeks once I’m cleared. I’ve always loved leg day, and I’m eager to return to exercises that build strength and endurance.

One aspect of the DTI50 program that stands out is the community support. The chat feature in the app allows participants to connect, share progress, and encourage one another. It’s inspiring to see familiar faces from high school and new connections working toward similar goals. This sense of camaraderie reminds me that I’m not alone in this journey.

That said, not every challenge has been easy. For instance, the cold shower component of the program has been particularly difficult for me. I’ve never been a fan of the cold, but I’ve embraced it as a way to wake up and invigorate my mornings. It’s a small discomfort that contributes to a larger sense of accomplishment.

Insights from “Trust and Inspire”

In addition to my health and fitness journey, I’ve been reflecting on lessons from the book Trust and Inspire: How Truly Great Leaders Unleash Greatness in Others by Stephen M.R. Covey and David Kasperson. Chapters 2 through 4 have been particularly impactful as I think about my career at New York Life and my aspirations for leadership.

The book emphasizes the importance of shifting from a traditional “command and control” leadership style to one that builds trust and inspires others to achieve their potential. This resonates deeply with me, especially as I prepare to advance in my career. One key takeaway is the idea that great leaders see the potential in others and create environments where that potential can flourish. This approach aligns with my vision for influencing positive change in the medical field.

As I incorporate these insights into my current role, I’ve started focusing more on collaboration and empowerment. Whether it’s mentoring colleagues or fostering open communication, I’m committed to being a leader who inspires confidence and growth.

Looking Ahead

The journey to better health, personal growth, and professional development is multifaceted and ever-evolving. As I continue to navigate the pureed diet phase, prepare for my MBA, and implement leadership lessons, I’m reminded of the importance of perseverance and adaptability. Each step, whether literal or metaphorical, brings me closer to my goals.

I’m grateful for the support systems in place—from my healthcare team and fitness community to my academic advisors and family. These connections provide the encouragement and accountability needed to stay the course. As I move forward, I’ll continue to share updates, challenges, and victories, hoping that my journey inspires others to pursue their own paths with determination and hope.

Remember that your strengths out weights the obstacles with your life!

Until next time,
