Celebrating 31: Lessons Learned and Excitement for the Year Ahead

Today, I turn 31. As I sit down to reflect on the past year, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of gratitude, pride, and excitement for the future. Turning 31 feels monumental—not because it’s a big milestone like 30, but because of the person I’ve become over the past year. This birthday is a celebration of resilience, growth, and the sheer determination that has brought me here.

The Lessons of Year 30

Last year was full of challenges and triumphs that taught me more than I ever thought possible. It’s true what they say: the hardest moments in life often teach us the most valuable lessons. Here are a few lessons I’ve learned over the past year that I’m carrying with me into 31.

1. You Can Do Hard Things

At 30, I embarked on some of the hardest journeys of my life. From battling health setbacks to finally qualifying for and undergoing VSG surgery, I’ve learned that I am far stronger than I ever believed. There were moments when I doubted myself—days when it felt impossible to keep going—but I discovered that strength isn’t about never struggling. It’s about showing up even when it’s hard and pushing forward one step at a time.

2. Growth Happens Outside Your Comfort Zone

This year, I stepped out of my comfort zone in so many ways. Whether it was documenting my journey with photos despite my discomfort, facing my fear of the gym, or embracing new opportunities, I’ve learned that real growth comes when you stop playing it safe. It’s scary, yes—but the rewards are always worth it.

3. Celebrate the Small Wins

In a world that glorifies massive achievements, it’s easy to overlook the small victories. But this year taught me to celebrate every single step forward. Whether it was quitting nicotine, improving my health, earning straight A’s, or waking up at 4 AM to work out, I’ve realized that those little wins add up to something extraordinary.

4. Boundaries Are a Form of Self-Love

One of the biggest lessons I learned at 30 was the power of setting boundaries. For years, I put everyone else’s needs ahead of my own, but this year, I made myself a priority. It wasn’t always easy—saying “no” can feel selfish—but it was one of the most liberating and healing decisions I’ve ever made.

5. Gratitude Changes Everything

When life gets hard, it’s easy to focus on what’s going wrong. But this year, I made a conscious effort to practice gratitude daily. Whether it was journaling about the things I’m thankful for, appreciating the people in my life, or simply pausing to soak in a moment of joy, gratitude has been a game-changer for my mindset.

Looking Ahead: Goals for Year 31

As I blow out the candles on my birthday cake (metaphorically, since I’m post-VSG and sweets are no longer part of my life), I can’t help but feel excited about the year ahead. There’s something magical about a fresh start, and I’m determined to make 31 my best year yet. Here are a few of my goals for the year:

1. Crush My Health Goals

My health journey has been a central theme in my life over the past few years, and I’m determined to keep the momentum going. With the help of my VSG surgery and the habits I’ve already built, I’m focused on:

• Continuing to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way.

• Building strength and stamina through my workouts, including the DTI50 program.

• Staying committed to my post-surgery lifestyle—no fast food, no sweets, and plenty of nourishing, wholesome meals.

• Prioritizing my mental health through therapy and self-care practices.

2. Excel in My Master’s Program

This year marks the start of my MBA in healthcare, and I’m determined to give it my all. I’ve worked so hard to get to this point, and I know this program will open up new doors for me. My goal is to approach my studies with the same focus and determination that helped me earn my bachelor’s degree.

3. Create a Home I Love

Robbie and I just moved into our first home together, and I can’t wait to make it our own. This house is more than just a place to live—it’s a symbol of everything we’ve accomplished together. My goal this year is to create a space that feels warm, welcoming, and uniquely “us.”

4. Continue Documenting My Journey

One of the most rewarding parts of this past year has been documenting my journey, even when it felt vulnerable. As I move into 31, I want to keep sharing my story—not just for myself, but for anyone else who might be inspired by it. Whether it’s through photos, journaling, or writing, I want to honor my progress and celebrate the courage it takes to keep moving forward.

5. Cultivate Joy and Connection

Life isn’t just about achieving goals—it’s about savoring the moments that make it beautiful. This year, I want to focus on creating joyful memories with the people I love. Whether it’s an annual apple-picking date with Robbie, quality time with family and friends, or simply enjoying quiet moments at home, I want to soak it all in.

Why 31 Feels Different

There’s something about this birthday that feels special. Maybe it’s because I’ve finally learned to love and accept myself. Maybe it’s because I’ve overcome so much in the past year. Or maybe it’s just the excitement of knowing that the best is yet to come. Whatever the reason, I can’t wait to see what this year holds.

At 31, I’m stepping into this new chapter with confidence, purpose, and an open heart. I know there will be challenges along the way, but I also know I have everything I need to face them head-on.

A Message to My Future Self

To the person I’ll be at 32: I hope you’re proud of how far you’ve come. I hope you’ve continued to grow, learn, and embrace the journey. And most of all, I hope you’ve stayed true to yourself, because you are worth it.

Here’s to 31—a year of growth, joy, and endless possibilities. Let’s make it unforgettable!
