I can hardly believe it has been six weeks since my Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG). The journey has been filled with ups and downs, but overall, I feel better than ever. Everything is still going well, despite a small hiccup along the way when one of my internal stitches popped. At first, it was a little concerning, but after consulting my doctor, I was reassured that it was completely normal. I just had to take it easy for about 6-10 days to allow my body to heal properly. Now that I’m past that, I’m back to feeling great and ready to continue pushing forward in my recovery and transformation.
One of the best things I did for my recovery process was sticking to DTI 50, which has been an absolute game-changer for me. This program kept me focused, accountable, and structured as I navigated these crucial weeks post-surgery. It gave me the consistency I needed to stay on track, and I’m so glad I stuck with it.
Now, the most exciting part—I am finally able to return to the gym! I’m starting with light lifting in addition to my usual cardio, and I couldn’t be more thrilled. The gym has always been an important part of my routine, and I’ve missed working out with my boyfriend at 4 AM. There’s something so empowering about starting my day with movement and strength training. It sets the tone for the entire day, improving not only my physical well-being but also my mental clarity and work productivity. Since I work from home, having that morning workout routine keeps me focused and energized throughout the day.
I’ve also noticed a major difference between lifting and not lifting—my body just doesn’t feel as loose as it did before surgery. Incorporating weight training again is going to be key in building strength and regaining that sense of mobility and flexibility I had pre-surgery. I’m ready to embrace this next phase of my fitness journey and continue pushing myself towards new milestones.
A Symbolic Transformation: Photos at the Ohio State Reformatory
Beyond the gym and recovery, I’ve also taken some exciting personal steps in documenting my journey. A friend and I recently visited the Ohio State Reformatory, and she will be taking monthly progress photos of me for the next year. The transformation I’ve already seen from December to January is astounding, and I can’t wait to continue capturing these changes month by month.
We chose the Reformatory for a reason—it symbolizes breaking free from my old life and stepping into a new one. The entire experience felt like a prison break, in the best way possible. I am shedding the past, the old habits, and the version of myself that held me back. Looking at these photos, I see a different person emerging—stronger, healthier, and more determined than ever.
Addressing the Misconceptions About VSG
I recently talked about this on my TikTok page because I feel like there are so many misconceptions about VSG surgery. So many people assume that weight loss surgery is the “easy way out,” but that couldn’t be further from the truth. This journey requires immense preparation, discipline, and resilience. It’s not just about getting the surgery—it’s about months, sometimes even years, of medical evaluations, therapy, and strict insurance criteria that must be met before being approved.
For me, qualifying for surgery wasn’t simple. I had to lose nearly 100 pounds just to reach 305 lbs for my insurance to cover the procedure. In addition to that, I had to meet with multiple doctors, nutritionists, and undergo psychiatric evaluations to ensure I was both physically and mentally prepared. The dietary requirements leading up to surgery were also incredibly strict—some programs require patients to stop eating solid food anywhere from two to eight weeks before surgery.
My process began with a partial liquid diet in late September, then a full liquid diet in November. The hardest part? The two weeks before surgery when I was on a strict clear liquid diet. Even after the surgery, I had to remain on a clear liquid diet for three weeks before gradually incorporating puréed foods. This was not easy—it required discipline and an unwavering commitment to my health and future self.
The Mental Battle of Weight Loss Surgery
The physical aspect of VSG is just one part of the challenge. The mental battle is what truly tests you. Watching others eat, smelling delicious foods, and knowing you can’t have them is a struggle that requires an incredible amount of willpower. And it doesn’t stop there—there are also the unsolicited opinions, teasing, and judgment from people who don’t understand what this journey entails.
That’s why having a strong support system is crucial. True support means encouragement, understanding, and respect for the sacrifices being made. This isn’t just a procedure—it’s a lifelong commitment to change, one that demands resilience every single day.
Why I Share My Journey
I’ve noticed that some people assume I’m flaunting my progress, acting superior, or looking down on others now that I’m making these changes. That is so far from the truth. I share my updates because I have family in multiple states who want to follow my progress, but more importantly, I want to inspire and help others who are going through this as well.
Weight loss surgery isn’t something you can do alone—it takes an army. I’m beyond grateful for my army—the people who hold me accountable, help me break bad habits, and encourage me through every step of this journey. If my story can help even one person feel less alone, more determined, or motivated to push through their own obstacles, then I know I’m doing something right in this world.
Looking Ahead
Now that I’m back in the gym, feeling stronger every day, and continuing to embrace this transformation, I’m more excited than ever about the future. The past six weeks have been filled with so much growth—physically, mentally, and emotionally. The best part? I know this is only the beginning.
I’ll continue documenting my journey, sharing my wins and struggles, and pushing forward with everything I have. If you’re reading this and considering VSG or any major life change, know that you are capable, strong, and worthy of the life you dream of. It’s not an easy road, but it’s absolutely worth it.
Here’s to breaking free from the past and stepping into a new, healthier, and happier future. 💪✨
