Three Months Post-Op: My VSG Journey, Lessons Learned, and A 5K Milestone

It’s officially been three months since I underwent vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) surgery, and I can’t believe how much has changed in such a short time. When I think back to the day of my surgery, I remember the mix of emotions—excitement, nervousness, and a whole lot of hope. Now, three months later, I am 55 pounds down and feeling more confident, energized, and determined than ever before.

This journey has been filled with highs and lows, moments of struggle, and incredible victories. Today, I want to reflect on what I’ve learned along the way, how I’m adapting to my new lifestyle, and an exciting milestone I’m about to achieve—completing a 5K Bubble Run with a group of amazing people I met on TikTok!

The Reality of Life Three Months Post-Op

Before surgery, I spent months preparing mentally, physically, and emotionally for this change. I read guidebooks, spoke to other bariatric patients, and worked on developing healthier habits. But no amount of preparation truly captures what life will feel like after surgery. Now, three months into this journey, here are some of the key takeaways I’ve learned:

1. Weight Loss Is Just the Beginning

Losing 55 pounds in three months is an incredible achievement, but VSG surgery is not just about weight loss—it’s about building a new lifestyle. I have had to change the way I view food, exercise, and even my relationship with my body.

Gone are the days of emotional eating or grabbing whatever is convenient. Now, I’m focused on nutrient-dense meals, protein intake, hydration, and mindful eating. This transformation is not just about shedding pounds—it’s about reclaiming my health and well-being.

2. Exercise Looks Different, and That’s Okay

Before surgery, I had big goals for hitting the gym post-op, but I quickly realized that jumping right into an intense workout routine wasn’t realistic. My body needed time to heal, and my energy levels fluctuated as I adjusted to my new nutritional intake.

Instead of pushing myself too hard, I started with:

  • Resistance bands at home – A great way to tone muscles without overexerting myself.
  • Walking pad workouts – Perfect for getting in steps while working from home.
  • Walks with Jazzy – My new pup has been my accountability partner, and getting outside for walks has been amazing, especially when Ohio’s weather cooperates!

While I haven’t been hitting the gym as much as I initially planned, I’m proud of the movement I’ve been incorporating into my daily life. Consistency is key, and I’m seeing my stamina improve little by little!

3. Mental and Emotional Shifts Are Just as Important

One of the biggest surprises of this journey has been the mental and emotional transformation. Weight loss surgery isn’t just a physical change—it shifts your entire mindset around food, self-care, and confidence.

I’ve had to learn:

  • How to handle cravings without falling back into old habits.
  • How to navigate social situations centered around food.
  • How to be patient with my body’s healing process.

There have been moments of frustration—times when the scale didn’t move, or when I felt exhausted and wondered if I was doing enough. But those moments have taught me resilience and the importance of celebrating non-scale victories like:

✔️ Having more energy throughout the day.
✔️ Fitting into clothes that haven’t fit in years.
✔️ Feeling stronger and healthier in my body.

Training for My First 5K – The Bubble Run!

One of my biggest goals before surgery was to complete a 5K, and I’m thrilled to say that it’s finally happening! I recently connected with an amazing group of people on TikTok who have also been on their own weight loss and fitness journeys, and together, we are gearing up for The Bubble Run!

This isn’t just any 5K—it’s a fun, foam-filled race that makes running feel like a party. I knew I wanted my first race to be something enjoyable and not too intimidating, and this event is the perfect way to celebrate my progress.

Since I’m still rebuilding my endurance, I’ve been following a beginner-friendly training plan with guidance from Freddy and Dylan at DTI (Desire to Inspire). Their expertise and motivation have been game-changers for me.

Overcoming Post-Surgery Challenges

While my progress has been incredible, I’ve also faced my fair share of challenges. Here are some of the biggest obstacles I’ve encountered and how I’ve worked through them:

1. Managing Energy Levels

Some days, I feel like I could conquer the world. Other days, I hit an energy slump and struggle to stay focused. Balancing protein intake, hydration, and rest has been key.

2. Staying Hydrated

With a smaller stomach, it’s harder to drink large amounts of water at once. I’ve had to sip consistently throughout the day and track my fluid intake to avoid dehydration.

3. Dealing with Food Sensitivities

Some foods that I loved before surgery no longer sit well with me. I’ve had to experiment with different meal options to find what works best for my body now.

4. The Mental Battle of Slow Progress

The scale won’t always move as fast as I want it to, but progress isn’t just about numbers. Learning to appreciate the small victories and long-term changes has been a huge mindset shift.

Looking Ahead – What’s Next on My Journey?

As I move into the next phase of my post-op journey, my focus is on:
✨ Continuing my 5K training and improving my endurance.
✨ Building more strength through resistance training.
✨ Prioritizing self-care and mental health.
✨ Celebrating every milestone—big and small!

This surgery was the tool I needed to take control of my health, but the real work happens every day in the choices I make.

I’m beyond grateful for this journey, the amazing support system I’ve found, and the newfound confidence I have in myself. To anyone else considering or undergoing weight loss surgery—you are stronger than you think, and the best is yet to come!

Final Thoughts

Three months down, a lifetime to go. This journey has been challenging, rewarding, and life-changing in the best ways possible. As I gear up for my first 5K and continue building healthier habits, I know that this is just the beginning.

To those who have supported me—thank you from the bottom of my heart. And to those who are on their own journey—keep pushing forward, one step at a time. You’ve got this!

🚀 Here’s to the next phase of the journey—let’s keep crushing those goals! 💪🏽✨

Until Next Time,

Kaylee Ann
