On June 14, 2025, exactly six months after my gastric sleeve surgery, I completed my first 5K—the Bubble Run. Crossing that finish line in 47 minutes and 18 seconds, I surpassed my original goal of finishing under 50 minutes. This milestone was not just about running a race; it was about overcoming countless physical, emotional, and mental challenges, affirming my strength, and embracing a profound personal transformation.
Preparation and Rest
The week leading up to race day was unlike any other. Balancing two jobs while preparing physically and mentally for the Bubble Run was not easy. It meant prioritizing rest, which proved challenging. Amid the hustle and the daily demands of my life, I consciously decided to slow down. I learned the critical importance of listening to my body, taking deliberate rest breaks, hydrating adequately, and nourishing myself properly. Rest became more than just a physical requirement—it was an essential mental reset, allowing me to center myself and visualize my goals.
The day before the race was filled with mixed emotions—excitement, nervousness, anticipation. My routine had to adapt significantly, reminding me yet again of the importance of flexibility and grace under pressure. Throughout that evening, I meticulously laid out my gear, checked the weather, and set multiple alarms to ensure I wouldn’t oversleep. These small acts of preparation helped settle my nerves, giving me a feeling of readiness despite the lingering anxiety.
Race Day: Overcoming and Triumphing
Waking up on the morning of June 14th, I was filled with a deep sense of purpose and clarity. Standing at the starting line, surrounded by others eager and energized, I felt the culmination of every single step of training, every moment of doubt, and every ounce of determination.
The Bubble Run was thrilling, with its colorful foam and lively participants adding to the festive atmosphere. I toggled between walking and jogging, pacing myself carefully, knowing that each step forward was a victory. With every kilometer I conquered, I felt more empowered. When fatigue crept in, I remembered my training with Freddy and Dylan from Desire to Inspire. Their encouragement, guidance, and unyielding support carried me through challenging moments.
At about halfway through the race, a fellow runner passed me wearing a shirt that read, “Wish You Were Here.” This simple message resonated deeply within me. It served as a powerful motivation, pushing me forward with newfound resolve. It was a gentle reminder that, although I wasn’t yet at their pace, each step brought me closer to achieving that future goal.
Running through sections of thick bubbles brought a unique and memorable challenge. At times, the bubbles were so dense that it felt impossible to see what lay ahead. Those moments symbolized life’s uncertainties. I continuously reassured myself, repeating, “Just keep going forward.” Even though the uncertainty was uncomfortable and the path unclear, I eventually emerged each time, proving to myself that the fear of the unknown could always be conquered with perseverance.
As I approached the finish line, the culmination of my efforts became vividly clear. Crossing it in 47 minutes and 18 seconds, joy overwhelmed me. I immediately turned to my fiancé Robbie and wrapped him in a huge, tearful embrace. Those tears signified immense relief, pride, and the fulfillment of accomplishing something that many, including myself at times, doubted I could achieve. Robbie’s unwavering support had been crucial, and sharing this victorious moment with him amplified my emotional response.
Reflections on Six Months Post-Op
The race’s timing held special significance: exactly six months post-op. This milestone symbolized far more than physical health improvement; it was a testament to mental resilience and emotional growth. Throughout these six months, I learned to redefine my relationship with my body, my health, and ultimately, my sense of self-worth. Every struggle, every ounce of pain and self-doubt, transformed into lessons that shaped me into a stronger, more resilient individual.
Realizing My Strength
Completing this 5K highlighted an essential truth: I can challenge myself and succeed. It pushed me to recognize my capability to achieve difficult goals, even amid life’s complexities. It wasn’t just physical endurance but a testament to my mental fortitude and emotional strength. The Bubble Run became a symbolic act of reclaiming my power, resilience, and determination.

Throughout the training and the race itself, I discovered invaluable lessons. Consistency and discipline emerged as cornerstones of my training approach. Each training session taught me patience and incremental progress. I learned that it’s essential to celebrate small victories, even on challenging days. I also gained insights into setting realistic goals, pacing myself, and balancing my workload with necessary recovery and rest.
What’s Next: Looking Ahead to July 4th
With this first 5K completed, my sights are now set on the next race on July 4th. As I prepare for this new challenge, I plan to incorporate what I’ve learned from my first race. My training will focus more on endurance and pacing strategies, aiming to gradually increase my jogging intervals and reduce walking time. I’ll also emphasize improving my hydration and nutrition leading up to race day, as well as prioritizing better rest amidst my busy schedule.
Setting a clear and achievable time goal is also part of my plan. While celebrating my previous victory, I’m committed to pushing further, aiming for a slightly faster finish. Each race is a stepping stone, reinforcing my journey towards sustained health, personal excellence, and the continuous expansion of my own potential.
As I move forward, I hold tightly to the belief that this race was merely the beginning. Each stride, each breath, and each step taken on my fitness journey is leading me to new horizons and greater accomplishments ahead.
Until next time.
